Secret Skiing: Three Destinations You Didn’t Know Had Ski Resorts

When people think of skiing, Zermatt in Switzerland, Aspen, Colorado and Chamonix in France come to mind but there are many less popular destinations that have superb facilities and which are less crowded.

If you want to escape the crowds and some of the frighteningly expensive costs associated with skiing then it’s well worthwhile taking a look at some of the world’s least known skiing destinations. As long as you have a spirit of adventure and have taken out some insurance then you can enjoy your holiday wherever you choose. Ski travel insurance from Allianz Global Assistance is affordable and covers many unexpected events so there’s no excuse not to venture off to pastures new.

New Zealand

This country is associated with wonderful beaches, wildlife and, of course, rugby. Wanaka is an ideal resort, especially for those that are accustomed to slopes that will really test your skill.

The resort is on the South island and close to Mount Aspiring National Park. Those in search of the ski slopes should head off to Treble Cone Ski Field or the Cardrona Alpine Resort.

The fact that New Zealand is in the southern hemisphere means those who have enjoyed European ski slopes during the Northern winter can just go south to continue their relaxation. (Image Courtesy of CardronaNZ.)

The Tatra Mountains in Poland are in the south of the country and the resort of Zakopane is just to the south of Krakow. The slopes of this resort are suitable for all types of skiers including nursery slopes for beginners and more testing runs for the more experienced.(Image Courtesy of itsmethen.)

The whole region is beautiful and used to be one of Europe’s best-kept secrets, though this is starting to change with 2 million visitors a year. The region has a very strong identity and visitors will enjoy a unique experience at this destination.

Borovets in Bulgaria has started to gain in popularity thanks to the fact that it’s one of the cheapest resorts in Europe. This resort is close to Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria, and experts advise that mid-week is far less crowded than at the weekend.

The whole resort centers on Mount Musala, which is around 2,540 meters high and perfect for the more advanced skier. There is also a ski school for those who wish to improve their skills.
