Contrary to what many people think Nevada isn’t just about sand, heat and Las Vegas. The state is home to a host of visitor attractions. Here are three to whet your appetite.
The Extra-terrestrial Highway
If you’re looking for an experience that is truly out of this world, then you might find it along State Route 375. A 90 mile stretch of this relatively quiet road is the centre for UFO sightings in the USA and, indeed, the route passes through the town of Rachel, nicknamed “The UFO Capital of the World”.(Image by Terry Hassan)
As you will be driving along this highway be sure that you take advantage of car hire excess direct. Insurance for rental cars tend to have much higher excess rates than usual and, who knows, you might bump into a flying saucer!
The Hoover Dam
Situated about 30 miles from Las Vegas, the Hoover Dam plays host to more than a million visitors a year. Its popularity is hardly surprising as there are guided tours of the dam’s facilities and the sight of the Colorado River tumbling 700 feet over the top of the dam is an amazing spectacle.
If you’re feeling particularly adventurous, then have a go at kayaking in the Colorado River. Trips start at the bottom of the dam and you can paddle your canoe as did the old pioneers of the Wild West.
The Fremont Street Experience, Las Vegas
Forget the casinos on The Strip, they cost money! The Fremont Street Experience is a stunning son et lumière display which takes place most evenings and it’s free.(Image by David Stanley)
The Experience is a huge overhead canopy onto which a light show is projected. Millions of LED lights make up the display and they appear to keep in time to music from top pop artists. To add to the fun there are street performers and the shops stay open late.
If you are feeling brave you can even ride a “zip-line” up beside the lights. A zip-line is simply a harness which is attached to a line suspended above the ground. Once strapped into the harness you are given a push and your flight, just below the light canopy, begins. Not for the faint-hearted! Please note that there is a charge for a ride on the zip-line.
Hopefully this very brief tour of the delights of Nevada will encourage you to take a closer look at what the state has to offer visitors. Remember to take plenty of sun cream with you. The temperatures are high all year round.
